Four poems published in The Seventh Wave

The Seventh Wave has published four of my poems—three of which are from my book, Wrecks, forthcoming from Noemi Press, and the last from my manuscript, Escape Attempts. Among these are some of the most difficult and rewarding poems I’ve ever written, and to see them in such awe-inspiring company is a dream many years in the making.

The Seventh Wave’s commitment to placing social justice at the core of its mission and as a key point of engagement for contemporary poetic praxis has made it one of the most relevant journals today. It was this commitment that made me feel that the Seventh Wave was the right journal for these poems, which explore the entanglement and dehumanization of both human and non-human animals within colonial structures. These poems were inspired by and in conversation with the great auk, a flightless seabird driven to extinction in the 1800s.

Building community and true literary relationships is a key part of this mission, and I’m so grateful to Joyce Chen and Betty Rawson for holding space for this cohort to truly connect.

Meanwhile, I cannot sufficiently express my gratitude to Emilie Menzel and Ivy Raff for their generosity in providing the thoughtful feedback these poems needed to reach their final form.
